ABOUT THE BAIYEEMBI ROYAL FAMILY

Chieftaincy is an enduring institution of governance in African societies and precedes colonial governance structures. Chieftaincy offers the basis for traditional leadership, governance, and authority.

The contemporary African Chief tends to be a traditional ruler who does not generally influence legislation that the government makes and Although Chiefs are recognized by governments, their legitimacy largely derives from the local norms and traditions. The modern African Chief continues to influence the life of African communities even though with limited political or executive authority.

The Cameroon Chieftaincy Law enacted on July 15, 1977, by Presidential Decree No 77/245 provides the legal and constitutional guidance on Chieftaincy institutions, including the dynastic Chieftaincy of the Baiyeembi Royal Family of Mbienjong in Tali One.

The Kenyang culture and traditions define the context in which the Chief of Tali One serves. The Chief is referred to as Mfor in the Kenyang culture. The modern Mfor performs symbolic and representational functions.

The Baiyeembi Royal Family supports the Mfor in fulfilling the following: offers a sense of stability and continuity in society; embodies the local cultural identity, unity, and pride; recognizes excellence and success of constituents; and promotes community service and development.
